The Final Fling 2018

The Flingers were not allowed on the Green for this event due to the Green being closed because of the torrential rain over the weekend.

However, the Flappers turned up in style.

Topsham Bowling Club was founded in 1928 and to acknowledge its 90th Birthday we tried to recreate a bit of the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. A good time was had by around fifty members reminiscing over the joys of the season, enjoying fine dining and having drinks from the best Speakeasy in town. There was not a violin case in sight.

Enjoy the photos!

Thank you everyone who supported our stall on the day or gave goods for us to sell. We raised £100 - not bad for a chilly damp day and not many visitors in town.

Flintstones win Skittle’s Triple Crown

Congratulations to Steve Phare’s Flintstones on winning this season’s Triple Crown – The League, Knock-out Cup and King of the Spares Trophy.

The Flintstones completed their league matches on 37 points, 3 points ahead of John Greenaway’s second-placed ‘Dodgers’ (34 points) and in third place were Pete Greeno’s ‘No Hopers’ with 32 points.  Zeynep Walkey’s ‘Bottoms Up’ secured the Wooden Spoon, having finished the season with four points from their two wins.

In winning the King of the Spares shield, the ‘Flintstones’ had an average of 2.75 spares per match.  In second place were Nigel Dyson’s ‘Spare Parts’ with an average of 2.54 and John Greenaway’s ‘Dodgers’ were third with 2.50 per match.  Peter Baker (Weakest Link) ended up as the season’s top individual spare scorer with 14 spares.  Alan Parkes (No Hopers) finished in second place on 13, with Joyce Hamilton (Globe Rollers) and Jackie Minto (Bottoms Up) in joint third, with 11 spares each.  Peter Baker also finished with the highest pin average of 49.33, followed by Adrian Elson (Jacks Rats) on 47.10 and Joyce Hamilton with 46.82.  Veronica Coe (Strikers) capped-off a fine night of individual skittles on Friday 23rd March by beating Adrian Elson (Jacks Rats) in the final of this season’s Captains Cup.

The Knock-out Cup final was contested by old adversaries in the Flintstones and the Dodgers on the evening of Saturday 7th April.  As expected, this was a keenly contested final with the lead changing hands four times during the match, which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats and the players on tenterhooks throughout.  It was only on the 5th and 6th ends when the Flintstones managed to pull away from their rivals, with scores of 70 and 63 respectively.  At the end of the match, the Flintstones had scored a total of 360 pins to the Dodgers 337.

Ron is Back!
(with some interesting stuff!)
Nov 2017 Musings

Back - AGAIN!

Yes, Ron’s back and it really does seem as though I’ve never been away. Summer passed without incident and my warm weather Winter training went incredibly well. I’m ready for the fray.

Since I last wrote to you it seems the World has become slightly madder and maybe a tad more dangerous while Topsham B.C. sails serenely on towards another Christmas and beyond. What, however, will 2018 bring?

My spies tell me that the men are unable to field a Captain for the new season meaning that, for the first time ever, we’ll be led by a lady Captain & Vice. Well if it’s good enough for the Country it surely must be good enough for a Devon bowls club! I hope that we’ll all be offering our full support and our thanks to the ladies concerned as, after all, it doesn’t bear thinking about had they not stepped up to the plate.

This does though make me wonder what might happen when the current crop of willing work horses within the club retires to their grassy field for a very well-earned rest. Others will have to come forward to take on their jobs or else the club will slowly decline and fold. Not a scenario to cheer the soul!

‘What about you, Ron?’, I hear you shout. An interesting thought, but, with all my foreign bowling and leisure commitments I simply don’t have the time. Others reading this almost certainly do.

Of all my ‘resting places’ it’s Topsham that I most enjoy. The Club’s integral to the place – it must survive and continue to offer all it currently does. So, come on guys, the solution’s in your hands.

Ron Bias.
